How to Grow Deep Roots in Your Faith

Shallow roots make for a shaky faith. A tree with deep roots can face drought, wind, and heat and still stand — still bear fruit. Growing deep roots in your faith doesn't happen overnight, but it does happen on purpose. Here's what Scripture says, in seven verses from the King James Bible.

1. Colossians 2:6-7

“6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: 7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.”

You received Christ — now walk in Him. Roots grow downward so the tree can grow upward: rooted, built up, established, and overflowing with thanksgiving.

2. Psalm 1:3

“And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”

Deep roots need deep water. The person who delights in God's Word and meditates on it day and night becomes a fruitful, unwithering, prospering tree.

3. Ephesians 3:17

“That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,”

Roots grow in soil — and your soil is love. Christ dwelling in your heart by faith is what roots you and grounds you when everything else shifts.

4. Psalm 92:12-13

“12 The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. 13 Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God.”

Notice where the tree is planted: in the house of the Lord. Staying planted in God's house — in fellowship, worship, and His presence — is how the righteous flourish.

5. 2 Peter 3:18

“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”

Growing is a command, not a suggestion. Grow in grace and in knowing Jesus — deeper roots always come from deeper knowing.

6. Ephesians 4:14-15

“14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:”

Shallow faith gets tossed by every wind. Deep roots keep you steady — growing up into Christ in all things, no longer carried about by every new idea.

7. Luke 6:48

“He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.”

Digging deep takes effort, but it's worth it. The flood will come — to everyone. Only the house with a deep foundation stands unshaken.
