Prayer Journals: How to Start (and Keep) a Prayer Journaling Practice
Share
There's something powerful about putting prayers on paper. A prayer journal gives your thoughts structure, tracks how God answers over time, and becomes a keepsake of your faith journey.
Why Journal Your Prayers?
Spoken prayers can scatter. Written prayers stay. When you write, you slow down, you get honest, and you create a record you can return to — proof, in your own handwriting, that God hears and answers.
“Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
How to Start
1. Start With a Simple Structure
A blank page can feel intimidating. Prompts remove the “what do I write?” barrier. The ACTS pattern — Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication — gives every entry a gentle shape.
2. Date Every Entry
Write the date at the top. Months from now, you'll look back and see exactly when God answered.
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” (Philippians 4:6)
3. Write Honestly
Bring God the real stuff — the worries, the hopes, the confessions. Your journal is a safe place for honest prayer.
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)
4. Record the Answers
Leave space to note when and how God answers. Over time, your answered-prayer list becomes one of your most treasured possessions.
How to Keep Going
Keep it simple. A few honest lines beat a perfect page you never write.
Keep it visible. Leave your journal where you'll see it each morning.
Give yourself grace. Missed days don't disqualify you. Just pick up the pen again.
“It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23)
