Take It, Send It: Sharing Photos With Family

Your grandkids light up when a photo of yours pops up on their phone. The good news: taking a picture and sending it takes about thirty seconds once you know where the buttons are. Let's learn it once, and you'll have it forever.

Part 1: Taking the photo

  1. Find the Camera app — it's the little camera icon on your home screen. Tap it.
  2. You'll see what the camera sees. Point it at what you want to photograph.
  3. To zoom in a little, put two fingers on the screen and spread them apart (like you're stretching the picture). To zoom out, pinch them together.
  4. Hold the phone steady — rest your elbows against your body if it helps.
  5. Tap the big round white button at the bottom center. You'll hear a click (or see a flash). That's it — photo taken!

A few photo tips from experience:

Light matters most. Face your subject toward a window or lamp. Photos taken facing the light come out bright and clear; photos taken with the light behind someone come out dark. Wipe the lens. If photos look hazy, your camera lens probably has a fingerprint on it. Give that little glass dot a quick wipe with a soft cloth or your shirt. Take more than one. Film used to cost money — digital photos are free. Take three or four and keep the best one.

Part 2: Sending it in a text message

  1. Open your Messages app (green speech bubble on iPhone, blue or green on Android).
  2. Open the conversation with the person you want to send it to — or start a new message by tapping the pencil/compose icon and choosing their name.
  3. Tap the camera icon (or the + button, then Photos) next to where you type.
  4. Your recent photos appear. Tap the photo you want to send — a blue checkmark appears on it.
  5. Tap Send (the blue arrow). Done! They'll get it in seconds.

Part 3: Looking at photos they send YOU

When someone sends you a photo, it just appears in your text conversation as a little picture. Tap the photo once to see it full-screen. Spread two fingers apart on it to zoom in closer — wonderful for seeing those grandbaby faces. To save it: press and hold the photo, then tap Save (iPhone) or Download (Android). Now it's in your Photos app forever, even if the text gets deleted.

Where do all my photos live?

Every photo you take is automatically saved in your Photos app (the colorful flower/pinwheel icon). Open it anytime to browse everything — they're organized by date, newest first. Nothing to file, nothing to lose.

Think of the moments worth capturing: the garden in bloom, Sunday dinner, the dog being ridiculous. Your family treasures these little windows into your day far more than you know. So take the picture — and send it. That thirty seconds of effort is someone's favorite part of their day.

If this helped you, share it with someone who has wonderful photos to share but isn't sure how.
