The Acts 1:8 Blueprint: God's Expanding Circles of Witness
Share
Just before He ascended, Jesus gave His church its marching orders in a single sentence: "Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth" (Acts 1:8). It's not just a command — it's a blueprint. And the book of Acts is the story of that blueprint being built, circle by circle.
Circle one: Jerusalem. Witness at home. The church begins where the disciples already are — in the city that crucified their Lord. Pentecost, the 3,000, the daily temple gatherings, the sharing of goods (Acts 2-7). Before the gospel ever travels, it takes root. Your Jerusalem is your household, your street, your workplace — the people who already know your name. Witness starts where you are, not where you wish you were.
Circle two: Judaea. Beyond comfort. "There was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria" (Acts 8:1). God used hardship to push them out of the nest. They hadn't planned to leave Jerusalem; persecution made them mobile, and "they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word" (Acts 8:4). Sometimes God's blueprint advances through our discomfort.
Circle three: Samaria. Crossing barriers. Jews and Samaritans despised each other — centuries of bad blood. But Philip "went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them" (Acts 8:5), and "there was great joy in that city" (Acts 8:8). The gospel doesn't respect our dividing lines. Your Samaria is the people you'd naturally avoid — the different politics, the different background, the uncomfortable neighbor. The blueprint says: go there too.
Circle four: the uttermost part of the earth. Paul's journeys carry the gospel across the known world — Cyprus, Galatia, Macedonia, Corinth, Ephesus, Rome itself. The book of Acts ends with Paul in Rome "preaching the kingdom of God... with all confidence, no man forbidding him" (Acts 28:31). From one locked room in Jerusalem to the capital of the empire in 28 chapters. That's the blueprint working.
And notice the order of the verse: power first, then witness. "Ye shall receive power... and ye shall be witnesses." Not striving, not guilt-driven activism — Spirit-fueled testimony. "Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD" (Zechariah 4:6).
So draw your own circles. Your Jerusalem: home and work. Your Judaea: the wider community. Your Samaria: the people across your dividing lines. Your ends of the earth: the nations, through giving, going, or praying. The blueprint hasn't changed in two thousand years — and it's still expanding.
